This song is the official theme song of the Centennial Celebration of the Canonical Coronation of La Naval de Manila (Oct 2007). I was a deacon assigned for the media promotion of the celebration. It was a great and tasking ministry. Hindi ko po talaga alam kung papaano ko nalusutan ang mabigat na responsibilidad na ito sa kabila ng aking kawalan ng karanasan sa ganitong larangan. Purihin ang Diyos! Salamat po, Mama Mary.

SALAMAT MARIA

Sa lawak ng dagat na aking tinatawid
Tanging pangalan mo ang siyang laging sinasambit
Hanap-hanap ang pangako ng iyong lambing
Inaasam na tuwina'y nasa iyong piling

Sa araw-araw na paglusong ko sa buhay
Ikaw lang ang saksi't nag-iisang bantay
Dayuhin man ako ng lungkot at hirap
Tanggulan kong lagi, lingap mo't yakap

Salamat Maria, sa iyong pagpisan
Sa bawa't hapis, luwalhati at tuwa namin
Salamat sa pag-ibig, at sa bawa't dalangin
Salamat sa iyo, sa mga pagdamay mo...
Kami'y patuloy na magmamahal sayo...

(interlude)

Sa araw-araw na paglusong ko sa buhay
Ikaw lang ang saksi't nag-iisang bantay
Dayuhin man ako ng lungkot at hirap
Tanggulan kong lagi, lingap mo't yakap

Salamat Maria, sa iyong pagpisan
Sa bawa't hapis, luwalhati at tuwa namin
Salamat sa pag-ibig, at sa bawa't dalangin
Salamat sa iyo, sa mga pagdamay mo...
Kami'y patuloy na magmamahal sayo...

Salamat Maria, sa iyong pagpisan
Sa bawa't hapis, luwalhati at tuwa namin
Salamat sa pag-ibig, at sa bawa't dalangin
Salamat sa iyo, sa mga pagdamay mo...
Kami'y patuloy na magmamahal sayo...

SALAMAT, MARIA
A Hymn of Gratitude to Our Lady

MANILA, Philippines -- This year is a high point for the La Naval de Manila tradition as the Church and nation celebrate the centennial of her canonical coronation.

The centuries-old venerated image of La Naval has been acclaimed by the faithful since 1593 and served as a beacon of faith and hope for the Filipinos through the centuries.

Indeed, La Naval is God’s gift for us; and whenever we receive her blessing, we cannot but give thanks. Effusive words and gestures seem not enough to express our gratitude for her, so we find another expression that we can offer: the gift of music.

The idea of an official theme for the centennial crystallized through Elaine Villar, who has not only been in the music industry for some time but is also a dedicated Marian devotee. She called Rev. Jeffrey Aytona, OP, to raise the possibility of a song for La Naval.

Reverend Jeff presented the proposal to Fr. Jojo Dagohoy, OP, chair of the La Naval Centennial Committee, who had a poem dedicated to La Naval by Jovito Cariño, a poet and former Dominican brother.

When Villar received the poem, she promptly contacted her friend, the composer Vehnee Saturno. After a game of basketball, Saturno went to his music room and, while in front of an image of La Naval (a gift by Villar), he began composing the theme music.

Talent coupled with inspiration provoked the musical prowess of a Marian devotee. In an hour, he was finished with his newest musical masterpiece! When Villar listened to it, she was moved and felt the song entering the deep recesses of her heart.

Reverend Jeff was astonished that in 24 hours the song was ready for approval. He asked the Dominican community to listen to the song. The critical acoustic acuity of the Dominican fathers and brothers was satisfied and the song was approved unanimously without much ado.

Villar immediately called Louie Ocampo, whom she considered family. Ocampo, who came from a religious family, as did a musical arrangement of the composition.

Villar asked the opinion of Fr. Boyd Sulpico, OP, who has a keen sense for music, about the song. Upon listening, Fr. Boyd texted her, saying: “Tears were welling in my eyes.”

Villar was finally convinced: “This is it!”

But who can perform such masterpiece for La Naval with integrity? There was only one person in mind—Basil Valdez.

As a balladeer famed for inspirational hits such as “Hindi Kita Malilimutan” and “Lead me Lord,” he was unanimously chosen to sing the official theme song of the centennial.

Basil’s manager, Wyngard Tracy, was very supportive of the project, or, should we say, “gift,” and agreed for Basil to perform and record it without any hesitation, even if the singer had already agreed to sing for free in the “Serenata” on Oct. 5.

October 4, coronation day of La Naval, is the formal launching of the official theme song of the Centennial of the Canonical Coronation of La Naval. The 1907 papal coronation will be relived by Church and civil dignitaries and the Catholic faithful that day, at 4 p.m.

Valdez will perform “our gift” to the Blessed Mother with the Tiples de Sto. Domingo and the UST Symphony Orchestra.

The theme is more than just a song. It is a gift of our self to the Blessed Virgin Mary: the talent, the skill, the devotion, the love—all expressed through music.

Lost in Space (1999)

I put a religious undertone in this 1999 pop song which I used to sing while contemplating my entry to the seminary/formation house. I took the entrance exam without the knowledge of my parents. Listening to this music makes me feel nostalgic. June 1, 1999 was the date of my entry. Although I was anxious, I remained faithful as my favorite line goes: "I never lose my faith in You."

Lost in Space

by Lighthouse Family

Sometimes I get tired of this me-first attitude
You are the one thing that keeps me smiling
That's why I'm always wishing hard for you
'Cause your light shines so bright
I don't feel no solitude
You are my first star at night
I'd be lost in space without you

And I'll never lose my faith in you
How will I ever get to heaven, if I do

Feels just so fine
When we touch the sky me and you
This is my idyll of heaven
Why can't it always be so good?
But it's all right, I know you're out there
Doing what you've gotta do
You are my soul satellite
I'd be lost in space without you

And I'll never lose my faith in you
How will I ever get to heaven, if I do
And I'll never lose my faith in you
How will I ever get to heaven, if I do
And I'll never lose my faith in you
And I'll never lose my faith in you

Pilgrim's Theme

I used to sing this song as I intensely contemplate on my vocation way back 1998. (Usually, while washing the dishes.) This has been my all-time favorite ever since.

Pilgrim's Theme

by Bukas Palad

Tired of weaving dreams too loose for me to wear
Tired of watching clouds repeat their dance on air
Tired of getting tired of doing what's required
Is life a mere routine in the greater scheme of things

Through with taking roads someone else designed
Through with chasing stars that soon forget to shine
Through with going through one more day - what's new
Does my life still mean a thing in the greater scheme of things

REFRAIN 1:
I think I'll follow the voice that calls within
Dance to the silent song it sings
I hope to find my place
So my life can fall in place
I know in time I'll find my place
In the greater scheme of things

Each must go his way, but how can I decide
Which path I should take, who will be my guide
I need some kind of star to lead me somewhere far
To find a higher dream in the greater scheme of things

The road before me bends, I don't know what I'll find
Will I meet a friend or ghosts I left behind
Should I even be surprised that You're with me in disguise
For it's Your hand I have seen in the greater scheme of things (REFRAIN 1)

BRIDGE:
For Yours is the voice in my deepest dreams
You are the heart, the very heart
Of the greater scheme of things (REFRAIN 1)

REFRAIN 2:
Why don't we follow the voice that calls within
Dance to the silent song it sings
One day we'll find our place
For all things fall in place
For all things have a place
In the greater scheme of things

Although I'm not a good singer, I really appreciate listening to music. I can actually identify songs that were popular during a particular period of my life or songs that really made a great impact on my life. Join me in this nostalgic musical journey.

This music blog contains all songs that have been part of the soundtrack of my journey called LIFE. Together with the lyrics, I'll be putting the significance of this song in my life.
